A replica jersey is a fan garment, not a game-issued one. That single fact explains almost every sizing surprise people run into.
A game-issued jersey is built to a specific athlete's measurements. A replica is built to a size chart for a few hundred thousand people at once, which means the fit has to serve a much wider range of bodies. Every league solves that problem differently, and that is why your size in one sport tells you almost nothing about your size in another.
This guide walks through what changes between sports, how to read a size chart properly, and how to decide between the print and stitched builds.
Measure your chest first, then pick the fit you actually want — close or layered. Soccer and basketball jerseys read close to body size. NFL and NHL jerseys are cut wide so you can wear them over a hoodie. Baseball jerseys are intentionally loose. If you only remember one thing: do not carry your size across sports.
What a replica jersey actually is
Replica is the mainstream supporter build. The fabric is lighter than what an athlete wears, the graphics are usually heat-applied or printed rather than stitched, and the cut is designed for everyday wear rather than for movement under pads. It is the version that makes sense if the jersey is going to be worn in the stands, at a bar, or on a Tuesday.
Above replica sits the player or match build, which uses a closer athletic cut and a lighter body fabric. Below replica sits nothing much — replica is the entry point, which is why it is the version most people should be buying.
The four fits, and why they are not interchangeable
Every league we carry stocks at least some of these: men's, women's, youth, and custom. These are separate patterns, not relabeled versions of the same garment. A men's medium and a women's medium are different garments with different shoulder widths and different lengths.
Youth sizing is the one people get wrong most often. A youth XL is not an adult small with a smaller logo — it is a smaller overall block, shorter in the body and narrower through the chest. If you are buying for a teenager who is close to adult size, the men's block in the smallest size usually fits better than the largest youth size.

Soccer shirts are the slimmest thing in the store. They are cut close through the chest and waist, and the match build is tighter still. If you want the relaxed look, go up one size from your usual t-shirt.
NFL jerseys are the opposite. They are cut wide through the chest and shoulders with room to layer a hoodie underneath in cold weather. If you are used to buying soccer shirts, take your NFL jersey in the size you would wear over a sweatshirt.
NBA jerseys sit in the middle. They track close to t-shirt size but run longer in the body with wider armholes.
MLB jerseys are intentionally loose. Baseball jerseys are designed to be worn over a base layer with room to move, so they feel big at the same letter size even though nothing is wrong with the jersey.
NHL jerseys are the heaviest and the most structured. They are cut wide so they can be worn over layers, and most people treat them as outerwear rather than as a fitted top.
Print versus stitched graphics
Printed and heat-applied graphics are lighter, cheaper, and completely normal on replica builds. Stitched tackling twill is heavier, holds its shape longer, and is what you want if the jersey is going to be worn weekly for several seasons.
Either way, heat is the enemy. Wash inside out in cold water, skip the dryer, and never iron directly over the numbers. Air drying is the single biggest thing you can do to keep graphics sharp.
How to decide between a team jersey and a player jersey
A team jersey carries the badge or wordmark with no individual name. It stays relevant through trades, transfers, and free agency, and it is the safer buy if you want one jersey to last.
A player jersey is more personal and more specific. It is the right pick if a particular athlete is the reason you follow the team — just go in knowing that the jersey is tied to a decision you do not control.
Custom jerseys and the one thing to check twice
Custom builds are made to order. That is why they cannot be returned the way a stock jersey can, and it is why you should confirm the spelling and the number before you check out rather than after.
Custom is the right call for a family jersey, a group order, a gift with a name on it, or a number that has personal meaning. If you want a stock design in a standard size, there is no reason to go custom.

Frequently asked questions
Can I wear the same size in every sport?
No. The cuts are genuinely different. Your soccer size and your NFL size should not be the same number unless you specifically want a tight NFL jersey and a loose soccer shirt.
Should a replica jersey be dry cleaned?
It does not need to be. Cold water, inside out, gentle cycle, and air dry. Dry cleaning is unnecessary and the heat cycles in a dryer are the real risk.
Do custom jerseys take longer?
They are made to order rather than pulled from stock, so they are not a same-day item. Confirm your spelling and number before submitting, because a custom build cannot be returned.
What if I am between two sizes?
Decide which direction you want the jersey to fail. If you want a close fit, take the smaller size. If you want to layer or want a relaxed look, take the larger one.
Which sport has the most forgiving sizing?
Hockey, because the garment is designed to be worn loose over layers. The least forgiving is soccer, especially in the match build.
